The Toyota 86 British Green Limited Is a Thing of Beauty from Toyota Japan
Aside from the Mazda Miata, which is of course the undisputed Japanese heir to the classic-British-roadster legacy, arguably no other small Japanese sports car has channeled the spirit of the Brits' minimalist, reasonably priced two-seat experience better than the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ twins. Toyota, in a rare fit of self-awareness, has decided to capitalize on this sentiment-at least in the Japan market-and created this Toyota 86 British Green Limited special edition.
Toyota makes little effort to hide the source of its inspiration; its Japanese website claims its British Green color "is the symbol color of the British car(s) who won the victory(s) all over the world." While its namesake green paint job carries the majority of the weight in terms of conceptual realization, the interior of the 86 British Green Limited features unique two-tone leatherette seat upholstery intended to evoke memories of the classic black-and-tan motif of the classic British era. Subtle contrast stitching on the cast black steering wheel and shift boot echo the theme. (Standard 86s wear silver trim accents.)
While no powertrain upgrades are provided, the special 86 wears a set of exclusive 17-inch cast aluminum wheels with a bronze finish made specifically t0 accommodate the red Brembo brake calipers. Consisting of four-piston units in front and two-piston in the rear, they manage to remain tasteful. The base 86's optional Sachs dampers are fitted as standard; the unique 86 British Green Limited rear spoiler and large underbelly pan work to maximize aerodynamics.
It's sad but completely expected that Toyota at this point has made no mention of bringing the 86 British Green Limited to the United States. That said, the company is already taking orders at home, with pricing starting at the equivalent of $30,035 at current exchange rates. Toyota says the model will be on sale until May 31 this year, so interested parties have time to contact the importer of their choice.
