Introduction
In advance of the 2018 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Ford debuts a sharper Edge to its SUV lineup.
The 2019 Ford Edge is an update of the 2018 model, featuring structural improvements intended to improve safety, styling enhancements to make the 5-passenger midsize SUV more appealing, and technological upgrades to make life easier, safer, and more enjoyable.
Ford also “begins introducing the coveted ST brand to its SUV lineup” with the 2019 Edge ST, which replaces the previous Edge Sport. Note the use of the word “begins” in that direct quote from Ford. Driving enthusiasts, rejoice.
Exterior Features
With the changes to the 2019 Edge’s styling, this SUV looks more comfortable in its own skin. The proportions remain a little wonky, but the visual updates represent improvement.
In addition to new front styling, a new hood, and standard LED headlights, the 2019 Edge gets a nip and a tuck around back. Upgrades include LED running lights, LED fog lights, and larger, more expressive aluminum wheel choices.
You’ll be able to tell the Edge ST apart thanks to its mesh grille, deep side skirts, dual exhaust outlets, and standard 20-in. wheels. A handsome set of dark-finish 21-in. wheels is an option, fronting available performance brakes with red-painted calipers.
Interior Features
Ford makes few announced changes to the Edge’s interior. A redesigned center console debuts, punctuated by a new rotary knob that the driver uses for gear selection. The Edge ST variant features unique sport-bolstered seating and multiple ST logos in various locations.
Under the Hood
A turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the Edge SE, SEL, and Titanium, and Ford aims to make it more fuel efficient this year by pairing it with a new 8-speed automatic transmission and engine start/stop technology. The turbo-two is also slightly more powerful, gaining 5 extra horsepower for 2019. It delivers motive force to the front wheels, unless the optional all-wheel-drive system is specified.
The Ford Performance team specially tunes the Edge ST. It contains a twin-turbocharged, 2.7-liter V-6 engine, same as the previous Edge Sport. However, power is up to 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft.
An 8-speed automatic transmission is paired with the twin-turbo V-6, and it features both paddle shifters and a new Sport driving mode. Sport mode quickens throttle response, holds transmission gears, sharpens engine braking, and modifies the exhaust note.
All-wheel drive is standard for the Edge ST. Additionally, it features unique suspension tuning and upgraded brakes. An optional Performance Brake package is available, as are summer performance tires for the larger 21-in. wheels.
Safety
Since its last redesign for the 2015 model year, the Edge has earned no more than an “Acceptable” rating in the small overlap frontal-impact crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This dubious distinction has kept the Edge off of the Institute’s “Top Safety Pick” lists for years. For 2019, Ford has made structural enhancements that are intended to improve this rating.
Ford also claims that the 2019 Edge will include more standard safety equipment than any other midsize SUV. Beginning with the 2019 model year, every Edge will have 911 Assist emergency calling, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, dynamic braking support, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and rain-sensing wipers.
If you don’t believe that’s enough to keep you safe, an evasive steering-assist system, post-collision braking system, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and lane-centering system will be available at extra cost.
Technology
In addition to a bevy of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies, Ford will include standard FordPass Connect with a smartphone app with every 2019 Edge. Using the app, owners can gain remote access to and control of certain vehicle features and functions.
Additionally, standard equipment includes Sync with AppLink voice recognition that is enhanced with a new Ford+Alexa integration, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 10 connected devices.
Optional tech upgrades for the new Edge SUV include a Sync 3 infotainment system with an 8-in. touch-screen display, a 180-degree front and rear camera system, active park-assist system that can get the Edge into a parking space and out of tight spots, wireless device charging, and a 12-speaker B&O Play sound system by Harman.
