2018 Buick Enclave SUV Moves Upscale

After nearly a decade, Buick is redesigning the three-row Enclave SUV for 2018. The Buick Enclave has remained competitive since it debuted in 2007, with a spacious cabin, responsive handling, and a supple, controlled ride. But it's time for an update.

With a sleek design that belies its size, the new Enclave manages to look both evolutionary and contemporary, hinting that its basic formula hasn’t changed. The more modern machine boasts 10 cubic feet more interior space than the outgoing Enclave. It also has a lot of storage solutions, including underfloor storage that maximizes space for passengers. Additionally, second- and third-row seats fold flat for loading cargo. Despite the gains in passenger space, the Enclave is more maneuverable, with a tighter turning circle to aid parking.

Significant attention has been paid to quieting the cabin, including various sound-deadening technologies and active noise canceling. Taking advantage of that hushed environment is an optional Bose Premium stereo. An 8-inch infotainment screen is used to address entertainment needs, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, and clever features found on other GM models, such as a Teen Driver monitor. All Enclaves come with an OnStar 4G LTE WiFi hot spot.

Again, a 3.6-liter V6 is found underhood. Power is up slightly, from 288 hp to 302 hp, although torque is down slightly, from 270 lb.-ft. to 260 lb.-ft. based on preliminary data from Buick. To aid efficiency, the engine is fitted with start/stop technology that can turn off the engine automatically when stopped. Also, the former six-speed automatic transmission is supplanted by a nine-speed unit. This setup has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and is available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Advanced safety features such as automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning are available, though not on all of the trim levels. And full-speed AEB is available only on the Avenir. We think FCW and AEB should be standard across the line.

There will be three trim levels (Base, Essence, and Premium) plus the new Avenir sub-brand for the best-dressed Enclave.

Although some Buick models are now imported, the Enclave will continue to be built at the Lansing, Mich., factory. Pricing will become available closer to the fall on-sale date.
