Despite the highest volume of passenger flights in history, there were no passenger plane accidents in 2017 as evidenced by figures from two separate consultant agencies, To70 and The Aviation Safety Network.

While that's terrific news for fliers everywhere, there were at least 10 fatal cargo crashes in the past year, according to the Aviation Safety Network. These crashes killed 79 people, some passengers and some on the ground, but that's down a considerable amount from 303 fatalities in 2016. However the figures do not include military crashes, which increased in number considerably in 2017, claiming the lives of over 30 troops.

The most deadly year in commercial aviation was 1972, in which the Aviation Safety Network recorded a total of 2,370 deaths. Hopefully 2018 will follow 2017's lead.
