2017 Buffalo Bills Draft Prospects: Quarterback Davis Webb

Continuing our new daily series, we continue to take a look at players the Buffalo Bills may consider selecting at some point during the 2017 NFL Draft. While these players may not all be first round quality, this series will look at players across all the rounds that the Buffalo Bills could select during the draft process.

Moving on from yesterday’s possible first round selection of safety Obi Melifonwu, today, we take a look at a player that could be selected either on day two or even three. Should the Buffalo Bills want a developmental quarterback option, Cal signal caller Davis Webb could be their guy.

Background

A former Texas Tech gunslinger, Davis Webb has had a wild ride during his time in college. Playing for the Red Raiders, Webb became Texas Tech’s starter midway through his freshman season as he unseated eventual Oklahoma transfer Baker Mayfield. Having mixed results over the next year and a half, Webb was eventually unseated himself by potential first round pick Patrick Mahomes.

Using a graduate transfer to end up at Cal, Webb ended up being the replacement for former number one overall pick Jared Goff. Though his results were mixed at best, Webb has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his college career. Given some great coaching, Webb could eventually develop into an NFL starter.

Strengths

For a 6’5, 225 pound quarterback, Davis Webb is pretty light on his feet. Showing some escapability in college, Webb can extend plays for a little bit of time due to this. His height also allows him to stand tall in the pocket while he also does a nice job of releasing the ball at it’s highest point.

When he is in a rythm, few quarterbacks will be better than Webb. Extremely accurate when he is feeling it, Webb can deliver pin point passes. Doesn’t rush things when facing the blitz and also shows some good patience as the pocket begins to collapse. Completion percentage also rose during the fourth quarter last season show how strong he is late in the game.

Weakness

Always seems to have mind made up where he will be throwing the football, no matter the coverage. Focusing on receivers also allows safeties and corners to cheat as they know where he will throwing the ball. Inconsistency on velocity has also seen Webb under and over throw more than a few receivers.

Can get thrown off his game very easily, resulting in many missed throws. Needing to feel “it” to do well, Webb will be the type of quarterback that goes through spurts. Despite his ability to get out of the pocket, Webb will also not be a run threat. Focusing on the basics with routes and going through progressions will be key to his success.
