2017 BMW 2 Series Gets Latest-Generation Upgraded Turbo Engines
BMW has announced that the new 2017 BMW 2 Series compact premium car models—including the M Performance coupe and convertible variants—will be equipped with the German automaker’s latest-generation TwinPower turbocharged 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines when they reach U.S. dealer showrooms later this summer.
The new 2017 BMW 230i Coupe and Convertible will be equipped with the newest 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates a higher 248 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. The new 2 Series M Performance models—the 2017 M240i Coupe and Convertible—will be powered by the new, all-aluminum, 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine that produces 335 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s 15 more horsepower than the previous power plant and an extra 39 lb.-ft. of torque.
The 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine offers a faster acceleration time—zipping from 0 to 60 mph in a claimed 4.2 seconds, which BMW says shaves off two-tenths of a second from the 0-60 mph time of its predecessor. The 2017 BMW M240i Coupe and Convertible’s new engines are partnered with BMW’s latest 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission.
Rear-wheel drive is standard on the 2017 2 Series M240i Coupe and Convertible, and these variants will be available with a 6-speed manual transmission at no extra cost. In addition, BMW officials said the M Performance models can be ordered with a BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.
Through the first four months of 2016, U.S. sales of the niche-market BMW 2 Series rose by more than 50% from a year ago, based on data collected by J.D. Power and auto forecasting partner LMC Automotive.
