2017 Audi A3 Gets Quicker, More Energetic TFSI Engine Option

This week, Audi, Volkswagen Group’s top-volume premium brand, reported that the 2017 Audi A3 small premium car will be offered with its new turbocharged 4-cylinder 2.0-liter TFSI engine. The new engine is more robust than the previous-generation 1.8-liter turbo that powered former A3s. Both the 2017 A3 sedan and cabriolet front-wheel-drive (FWD) models with the new powertrain option will reach U.S. dealer showrooms this fall.

Audi’s optional TFSI (turbocharged fuel-stratified injection) engine in the 2017 A3 adds performance and efficiency with a boost of 16 horsepower and 21 lb.-ft. of extra torque in comparison to the previous model’s powertrain. The new direct-injection engine offered in front-wheel-drive (FWD) models generates 186 horsepower and 221 lb.-ft. of torque when mated with Audi’s new 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.

Audi states that the EPA estimates that the 2017 A3 with the new engine option will average 29 mpg in combined city and highway driving. This new model also can zip from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds, Audi says, which is 0.6 seconds faster than the previous model.

Refreshed on the outside for 2017, the Audi A3 sedan and cabriolet are also available with a higher-performance 2.0-liter TFSI quattro all-wheel-drive (AWD) 4 cylinder-engine that achieves 220 horsepower and is partnered with a 6-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission.
