20-year-old Fond du Lac man led police pursuit after crashing his car in suspected drunk driving incident

FOND DU LAC – A 20-year-old man was arrested May 11 after crashing his car and attempting to flee police.

The Fond du Lac Police Department responded at about 1:30 a.m. to the man, whose vehicle had struck a light pole in the area of North Peters Avenue and Security Drive. He was alert and refused to exit the locked vehicle, though the vehicle was smoking, police said in a news release.

An officer broke one of the windows of the vehicle to help the driver get out in case the vehicle caught fire, but the driver then reversed the vehicle and fled on North Peters Avenue. The pursuit that followed reached speeds of about 40 miles per hour.

He drove through a fence and continued into a field, striking an unoccupied vehicle and another fence. He continued to accelerate his vehicle to flee again, until officers responded with a Bear Cat armored rescue vehicle, after which he exited the vehicle and was arrested.

His charges include operating while intoxicated, fleeing and recklessly endangering safety.
