1. Best Surprise Bombshell: Brie Larson in Rodarte

It’s not that we didn’t know Brie is a total dish; she just spent most of last year’s Room victory lap in edgier outfits, whereas this one is classic, sweetheart, hourglass glamour enlivened with a few modern touches, proving how well she can do both. In other words, much like the cheese after which she is named, Brie pretty much goes perfectly with everything.

2. Most in Need of a Revision: Kerry Washington in Dolce & Gabbana

Kerry’s head looks great, and her shoes are good. But how did we arrive at the rest of it? Was there a game of Pin the Bow on the Shapewear that we missed?

3. Most Utterly and Completely Drew Barrymore: Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier

If 2017 you had traveled back in time 10 years and said to 2007 you, “We have two minutes to talk. So: Drew Barrymore will dress like a slightly messy but cheerful bird at the Golden Globes, and also our country might be about to burn itself to the ground,” we hope you would’ve only wasted time asking questions about that second part. Because the rest of this isn't that unexpected.

4. Most Vexing: Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen

We were going to call this “a tsunami of NO,” and then we realized that might actually be the design concept.

5. Most Potentially Her Second Choice: Zoe Saldana in Gucci

Zoe always brings avant-garde fashion to the table, but it feels like we’ve been seeing variations on this basic Gucci concept pumped out on red carpets for about a year now - to the point where we assume there’s a totally crackers Prabal frock languishing in her closet at home, which she couldn’t wear because one of her twins threw up all over it. There's a reason why you always have a backup.

6. Best Debut: Issa Rae in Christian Siriano

As this is the debut season of her HBO show Insecure, we're seeing Issa’s first real run at a major red carpet event. But doesn’t this look like she’s an old pro? Better change her show name to Actually, I’m Totally Good With Myself, Thanks.

7. Most Seamless: Regina King in Romona Keveza

Was this dress born on her body? Did it simply appear there yesterday afternoon after she made a wish? Was it laid atop her figure by angels carrying kittens? We'd accept any of those answers, but honestly, the truth is likely that Regina King is a fox who picked a dress that was tailored with more TLC than a ‘90s radio mix.

8. Most … Seamed: Hailee Steinfeld in Vera Wang

This color is beautiful - and she is lovely - but that bodice is drawing way too much attention to its own shortcomings. It looks like two sides of a broom got into a fight with each other.

9. Best Pieces of Flair: Rachel Bloom in Christian Siriano

We already love the cut of this dress on Rachel, but the little flowers cascading down the skirt are such a twinkling delight. Who doesn’t want to drizzle themselves in gold?

10. Worst Pieces of Flair: Blake Lively in Versace

Everything about this is stunning, until we get to the fabric scraps stapled to her hips that are masquerading as pockets. She has to stand like a linebacker to get her hands in them, and they’re not even deep enough to hide snacks. What is the point, we ask you?!?

11. Prettiest in Pink: Angela Bassett in Christian Siriano

It’s a fine line to walk when you’re a celebrity in your own right, but you’re technically on the red carpet as a plus-one (Angela and Courtney B. Vance are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary this year). This dress is simple - so as not to draw focus from the nominee on her arm - but the color is glorious. So is she.

12. Best Scrolldown: Thandie Newton in Monse

At first glance, this is a simple, perfect white dress. Until you get to the bottom and realize it both is - and has the illusion of being - hot like fire.

13. Most Appropriately Metaphorical Gown: Emma Stone in Valentino

La La Land has only made her a bigger star. It’s apt she wore a dress absolutely covered in them.

14. MVP: Viola Davis in Michael Kors Collection

From top to toe: Perfection. As usual.

15. Highest Degree of Difficulty: Janelle Monae in Armani Prive

On most people, this dress would be ridiculously twee. On Janelle, it’s quirky, charming, and joyous. And we’re praying it doesn’t start a trend, because no else is going to be able to manage that.

16. Most Danceable: Gina Rodriguez in Naeem Khan

Look at the fantastic fringe! How Gina got through the night without shimmying constantly is beyond us. She must have superhuman strength … or, at the very least, the willpower to do it out of camera range.

17. Best Suit: Evan Rachel Wood in custom Altuzarra

Many women have attempted to pay sartorial homage to Marlene Dietrich, and most of them fail. This, though, passes the test with full marks. The fit is perfect, which is half the battle, but most of all, she just looks profoundly cool.

18. Most Regrettable: Sophie Turner in Louis Vuitton

Poor Sansa Stark. She’s the newest bold-faced name to sign up to be one of the many celebrity faces of Louis Vuitton, and you can tell she got last dibs at the Golden Globes clothing rack. The entire time she was posing for photographers, her face said, “Ugh, I know, and I don’t want to talk about it.” Don’t worry, kid. We know it’s not actually your fault.

19. Biggest Gamble: Jessica Biel in Elie Saab

On a red carpet full of people’s sternums, this dress was the, uh, sternumiest. (Is that a word? It is now.) Is torso the new cleavage? Can we veto that decision?

20. Smallest Gamble: Ruth Negga in Louis Vuitton

Ruth has a penchant for the unusual, so the sleek, simple glamour of this frock feels a bit like she hit the reset button for awards season. We can only hope she's done so in preparation for a run toward the Oscars that's progressively more and more unique. The SAGs are up next, Ruth. No pressure, but we can't wait.
