Fairfax County police: Suspect in custody after 2 women shot at Springfield day care center

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (DC News Now) — The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) said medics took two women to the hospital Wednesday after a man shot them at a day care center in Springfield.

FCPD said that officers were called to the 8500 block of Bauer Dr. just before 2:15 p.m.

In a news conference, Deputy Chief of Police for Investigations, Brooke Wright, said that the suspect — 41-year-old Julio Pascual Sejas of Arlington — is either an estranged spouse or a current spouse of one of the victims. Wright described the shooting as “domestic in nature.”

Wright said that Sejas was at the front door of the building to try to speak to one of the victims. The woman did not open the door prompting him to fire three rounds from a pistol through the door.

Police said that both of the women were employees at the day care. Both of them had non-life-threatening injuries.

Wright said that none of the children in the day care were injured. They had all been moved and released to their parents or guardians as of 5:15 p.m.

“Almost all of us are parents. We understand exactly what the public is feeling, and we want to reassure you that we will do everything to get this person or any other person who is dangerous into custody as soon as possible to protect our children,” Wright said during the conference.

In an update just after 6:30 p.m., FCPD said that Sejas was in custody.
