2 tornadoes sweep through the Big Country, causing damage to homes

BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – On Saturday, May 25, two tornadoes swept through the Big Country, causing damage to homes and claiming the lives of livestock.

According to the National Weather Service Abilene/San Angelo, the first tornado touched down and traveled through Taylor, Coleman, and Callahan Counties. After it dissipated, the same storm brought a second tornado that touched down in Cross Plains and lifted in Eastland County.

The National Weather Service reported the first tornado as a funnel cloud seven miles southwest of Buffalo Gap. At 3:43 p.m., law enforcement confirmed the tornado on the ground south of Lawn and north of the Runnels County line.

The second tornado was first reported as a funnel cloud at 5:35 p.m. one mile northeast of Cross Plains. By 5:42 p.m., it had moved to a location four miles northeast of Cross Plains and was reported as a brief tornado near the Callahan-Eastland county line.

Hail measuring up to 2.5 inches was recorded.

According to social media reports, downed trees, electricity loss, roof damage and livestock loss occurred. Residents reported that two RV homes were destroyed in the tornado, but no injuries have been reported at this time.

The NWS has dispatched damage surveyors to the Cross Plains area, and BigCountryHomepage will share the results as soon as they are available.
