2 suspects in custody after high-speed chase in Oak Brook led to a manhunt in Burr Ridge
BURR RIDGE, Ill. - Two suspects are in custody after a high-speed chase led to a manhunt in Burr Ridge Wednesday afternoon.
Around 2:30 p.m., an undercover Oak Brook police officer spotted a tan Chrysler minivan with fake plates allegedly wanted for multiple thefts in multiple jurisdictions. A chase then ensued.
Officers followed the vehicle onto Interstate 88, Interstate 355 and Interstate 55 at speeds reaching 100 mph.
Two suspects eventually left the vehicle and fled from police near 79th Street and Wolf Road in Burr Ridge.
One suspect was taken into custody immediately, while the other fled into the woods.
"It's kind of scary to see this happening and they came from so far away. That's the weird part", said a nearby resident, Sandy Bulthuis.
Law enforcement officials set up an extensive perimeter and searched a heavily wooded area with help from K9s, drones and helicopters.
"It's a little scary. I heard one of the dogs barking. I think that's how they alert if they found something. I saw everyone running down towards the sound", said another resident, Renee Letourneau.
Just before 5 p.m., police captured and handcuffed a second suspect. Sandy Bulthuis, who has lived in Willow Springs for six decades, said she was relieved.
"That was wonderful to see. Police from all different areas. It made me think, 'This must be very, very important," Bulthuis said.
Pleasantdale Elementary, a nearby school, was placed on a soft lockdown as a result of the incident.
Charges are pending.
