CANTON − 2 Scoopz Ice Cream Shop will open March 15 in downtown Canton with a new addition to its menu − alcoholic treats courtesy of its new liquor license.

"Ice cream is something that everybody loves," owner David Beck said of the shop at 138 Fifth St. NW in downtown Canton. "I want to serve ice cream so tasty, that customers order two scoops!"

Beck, a lifelong Canton resident, identified a void in downtown Canton when he acquired the building at Fifth and Court streets in Fall 2019. Beck, who with his brother owns The Birdie Shack, a golf and ice cream establishment in Kent, said ice cream was a missing element in downtown Canton.

Beck said the name came easily because he believes "two scoops of ice cream are better than one."

Beck, who said he helped to found the Pro Football Hall of Fame Marathon with friends, said he's committed to the community. "It’s important to me to be a vital part of Canton," Beck said.

The shop actually made its debut in Spring 2023, participating in First Fridays with its ice cream offerings. Its flavors are unique and fun, such as Puppy Chow (peanut butter ice cream with a chocolate ribbon crunch) and Play Dough (bright yellow vanilla ice cream with flecks of assorted neon-colored cookie dough), as well as a coffee-infused Rush Hour flavor.

Back to that liquor license. Beck obtained it for 2 Scoopz and created alcoholic sweet-shop concoctions during Winter 2023 and First Fridays so far in 2024. Offerings included hot chocolate and Baileys; Peaches and Cream infused with rum; and slushes featuring Hennessy and lemonade.

Talia Barboza, 2 Scoopz's general manager, contributes to the shop's inventive menu with creations like waffle nachos (ice cream with waffle cone crumbles, syrup drizzle and toppings). "There will surely be something unique and new when customers visit," Barboza said.

The shop also connected with the community in 2023 by going mobile with an old-school ice cream pushcart.

Looking ahead to 2024, 2 Scoopz will open its doors for the season on March 15. Patrons can enjoy special ice cream adult beverages or indulge in a few scoops of their favorite flavors. The distinctive tradition of ringing the bell when getting two scoops continues this year.
