2 innocent bystanders shot in Tompkins Square Park: NYPD

EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (PIX11) — Two innocent bystanders were shot in Tompkins Square Park on Saturday afternoon, according to the NYPD.

Around 12:47 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call located on Ninth Street and Avenue A. Two men were assaulting another male who pulled out a gun and opened fire on the two assailants, police said.

Two innocent bystanders were shot, and as a result, the victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 26-year-old man received a gunshot wound to his back and a 53-year-old woman received a gunshot wound on her hip, according to authorities.

The gunman who opened fire and the assailants fled the scene; police are currently looking for people who witnessed the incident.

No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing.
