2-year-old dies in Tampa hospital 2 days after driver rear-ends car in Lehigh Acres

Two days after a Fort Myers man was arrested for injuring two toddlers and their mother in an alleged DUI crash, authorities provided a grim update.

Troopers said a 2-year-old injured in the crash died Tuesday at Tampa General Hospital.

Alexquang Dang Nguyen, 45, was initially charged with two counts of DUI causing serious injury, two counts of DUI with damage to property, and one count of DUI with injury to another.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Tuesday afternoon one of the two counts involving serious injury will be upgraded to DUI manslaughter.

The wreck happened around 11:50 p.m. Sunday along State Road 82, near Gunnery Road, in Lehigh Acres, according to the incident report.

Troopers said Nguyen was traveling east on State Road 82, on the inside lane, west of Daniels Parkway, while a car operated by a 30-year-old Lehigh Acres woman was stopped on eastbound State Road 82, ahead of Nguyen, for a red light.

Authorities said Nguyen rear-ended the victim's car, sending it off the road and into the northeast side shoulder tree line.

The driver and 2-year-old were critically injured and taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, along with a 3-year-old who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A 30-year-old Lehigh Acres man in the car wasn't injured.

Nguyen, who was also taken to the hospital, is next due in court April 8 for his arraignment. He remained in custody Tuesday afternoon on $175,000 bond.
