2-year-old boy fatally shot in South Bend yard

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — South Bend police say a 2-year-old boy was fatally shot while playing in a relative's front yard in a neighborhood just a few blocks south of the University of Notre Dame campus.

Capt. Phil Trent says investigators are not sure whether the boy was the target or was struck by a stray bullet Wednesday evening. Trent says all possibilities are being considered. He says gunfire was reported around the same time a block or two away.

The county coroner's office identified the boy as John Swoveland of South Bend. Deputy Coroner Nancy Pemberton says an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Trent says investigators hope the autopsy and ballistics tests will help determine whether the boy was the target of the shooting.
