2 NYC police officers critical after Brooklyn fire

NEW YORK (AP) — Two New York City police officers overcome by smoke while responding to a suspicious fire on Coney Island remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Officers Rosa Rodriguez and Dennis Guerra were found unconscious and unresponsive Sunday afternoon in the hallway on the 13th floor of a residential building.

The 36-year-old Rodriguez is in Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan. The 38-year-old Guerra was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

Police Commissioner William Bratton says both officers suffered carbon monoxide poisoning and the effects of smoke inhalation.

Police say a suspect is in custody, but no charges were immediately filed.

No other information on the suspect or how the fire started was immediately available.
