2 NY labor cases lead to $2.25M in payouts
NYC retailer and moving company employees sharing in settlements for $2.25 million
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- The New York Attorney General's Office says settlements in two labor cases have produced $2.25 million for workers at companies based in New York City.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says 306 current and former employees of Flat Rate Movers are sharing $1.13 million, while about 100 workers of Mystique clothing stores have begun getting $920,000.
That follows a 2010 investigation authorities say showed Flat Rate failed to pay overtime though some movers worked up to 75 hours a week and items like uniforms, parking tickets and truck damage were unlawfully deducted from wages.
At Mystique shops, authorities say employers failed to pay the legal minimum wage to some workers, failed to pay overtime after 40 hours a week and retaliated against complaints.
The settlements announced Thursday also paid for company monitoring.
