RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — With Attorney General Josh Stein aiming his arrow towards governorship, four candidates are hoping for a victory Super Tuesday and to take his open seat in November.

In the running are three Democrats and an unopposed Republican.

On the Democrat side, Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry, attorney Tim Dunn and U.S. Rep. Jeff Jackson are all hoping for a win on Super Tuesday. Jackson is regarded as the most likely to win the party’s primary race.

That would place the democratic Congressman in a matchup with Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop.

Congressman Jackson currently represents the state’s 14th district. When voting maps were redrawn last year, it made it all but impossible for him to win a reelection due to the increase in Republican voters now within the new lines.

Congressman Bishop was a major holdout in electing Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House and has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump. It’s important to note, however that no Republican has been victorious in an attorney general race in the state since 1897.

Last fall, Gov. Roy Cooper said he expected this would be the most expensive attorney general race in the state’s history.

Polls are scheduled to close at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Check back with CBS 17 after polls close for results.
