School bus driver dead after crash on DuSable Lake Shore Drive

CHICAGO — A school bus driver is dead following a crash on DuSable Lake Shore Drive Wednesday afternoon.

Two juveniles, ages 12 and 9, who were on board when the crash occurred are expected to be OK after being rushed to Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago for observation.

According to Chicago police, the 39-year-old man suffered a health emergency while driving and lost control of the bus before striking a median.

The driver was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Christopher Johnson.

No other injuries were reported.

SkyCam9 flew above the scene at Illinois Street and Grand Avenue, where rush hour traffic was slowed due to the crash in the northbound lanes of DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Chicago police said a death investigation is ongoing.
