BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — An Army veteran turned firefighter is recovering at Jacobi Hospital after he and two other FDNY members were injured battling a blaze in the Bronx Friday afternoon, according to officials.

“I want to thank Jacobi Hospital,” Mayor Eric Adams said. “This hospital continuously responds to not only everyday citizens in the Bronx but also first responders, and I want to thank them for the level of professionalism.”

The two-alarm fire started in a house and spread to a second nearby home at 3 p.m. Fire trucks and firefighters surrounded the houses as black and gray smoke filled the sky, a video posted to Citizen shows.

Firefighters sprayed the outside of the house with water to help the fire die down and enter the dwelling. Despite heavy smoke engulfing them, they entered the building. One of the firefighters, who was holding a hose to extinguish the flames, reported feeling lightheaded and fell. A mayday was called, and the firefighter was pulled from the scene. The FDNY member was in respiratory arrest, officials said.

EMS members and other FDNY members on the scene used life-saving measures, and the firefighter was swiftly transported to the hospital, authorities said.

Officials said the firefighter is recovering in the ICU burn unit and should be released Saturday evening, barring complications. Another firefighter is pending discharge, and one FDNY member was treated at the scene, authorities said.

Over 100 FDNY members responded to the scene. The fire was under control by 4:30 p.m., officials said.

It remains unclear how the fire started. Five people were displaced due to the fire, FDNY officials said.
