2 dead after head-on crash on Highway 43

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Two people are dead following a two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 43 early Sunday morning.

On May 12, around 3:34 a.m., CHP officers responded to Highway 43 north of Pond Road for reports of a collision with major injuries.

According to CHP, the crash happened when a man driving a Honda northbound on Highway 43 veered to the left and out of its lane and directly into the path of a southbound Dodge vehicle.

The 58-year-old driver of the Dodge could not avoid the Honda in time and the front of the Honda collided with the front of the Dodge, with three other passengers inside, officials said.

The driver of the Honda sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

A 69-year-old passenger in the Dodge also sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the crash site, according to officers.

The driver of the Dodge and two other passengers sustained moderate injuries and were transported to Kern Medical Hospital for treatment.

The names of the two deceased will be released by the Kern County Coroner’s Office at a later time.

CHP said the use of alcohol and drugs as a factor in this crash remains under investigation.
