2 crashes weeks apart destroy Las Vegas homeowner’s wall

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Two crashes, just weeks apart have destroyed a local homeowner’s wall, leaving a community worried for their safety.

“It gives me a lot of anxiety, especially when I hear the cars driving so fast; They peel down this road,” southwest valley resident, Maxine Sadler shared, in disbelief that her wall was crashed into twice over a two-week span.

While the first incident was startling, it was this most recent crash that happened last week that left the most damage.

Sadler said her neighbor that called her around 4 a.m. to check to see if she was alright.

“My neighbor said there had been an accident and a car had gone through my wall,” Sadler shared. “The Desert Willow sign, completely destroyed.”

Still dark, Sadler stepped outside to find chaos in her own backyard and immediately checked to see if the person driving was okay.

“He was out of the car and he was standing and kind of weaving. He even admitted he had been drinking,” she explained.

That man, Sadler says, lives in her neighborhood and was arrested.

Those who live in the Desert Willows community say this is more than just a couple of reckless drivers, but an overall problem the neighborhood has been dealing with for months.

“Drunk drivers going too fast, it happens a lot in this neighborhood and there are a lot of kids around,” Scott Owen said.

Owen stated that they are in desperate need of safety hazards to make drivers slow down and pay attention.

“They need to put in speed bumps. We’ve got a grade school and a junior high across the street. There’s no crossing guards and no lights or anything,” he added.

Dennis Del Vecchio said he won’t even let his kids walk home from school because of how dangerous it’s been.

“It’s definitely scary. We have 5 kids and we never let them walk these streets alone,” he said.

Sadler also shared that the HOA and the drivers’ insurance have been helpful in patching up the wall, but she still doesn’t know when it will all be fixed.
