Work to resurface two sections of M-29 in St. Clair County totaling over five miles long kicks off on Monday.

That includes the state throughway from Marine City’s northern border to Remer Road in China Township, as well as between Yankee and River roads in St. Clair Township, where M-29 is also called River Road but cuts off ahead of Busha Highway.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the $1.9 million project is slated to end by June 10, and all work be completed with lane closures and traffic regulators.

Earlier this year, regional MDOT spokesperson Jocelyn Garza said that means crews will use flag control.

The work itself is aimed to improve the safety and operations of the roadway, according to the state.

MDOT reported the M-29 work this spring would yield an investment supporting roughly 23 jobs.

Much of M-29 in southern St. Clair County is rated as poor on the PASER, or pavement surface evaluation and rating, scale, particularly through Clay Township, Algonac, and parts of Marine City, as of 2021.

The surface is also rated as poor along the two segments being targeted by MDOT this spring. In contrast, M-29 on the southern side of the city of St. Clair has a good rating.

Other road rehabilitation projects are penciled in for M-29, according to MDOT’s listed five-year program through 2027, including Dixie Highway between County Line and Church roads and Church to Palms Road in Ira Township, as well as Busha from River Road to the Interstate 94 business loop in Marysville.
