1st time Oscar nominees dominate categories

We’re just days away from Hollywood’s biggest night.

Amid the glitz and glamor of the annual event, nearly a dozen big names will be walking that red carpet for the first time as Oscar nominees.

Out of the 20 acting nominees, these nominees are up for the coveted award for the first time:

America Ferrera

The actress has come a long way from her days on “Ugly Betty” and “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” Her powerful monologue in “Barbie” made her a standout star where she earned the nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Cillian Murphy

The Irish actor garnered praise for her role as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Christopher Nolan summer hit “Oppenheimer.” He’s up for Best Actor for taking on the lead in the film. In January, Murphy took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor for the movie.

Colman Domingo

The “Euphoria” actor is not only receiving his first Oscar nomination, but he’s also the first Afro Latino nomination in the Best Actor category. After decades in show business, he received the nod for his role as Bayard Rustin in “Rustin.” The leader was a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement and advisor to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Danielle Brooks

Danielle Brooks is nominated for Best Actress for her role as Sofia in the movie musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” Brooks portrayed that same character in the Broadway revival of the musical, which earned her a Tony and Grammy award.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph

Da’Vine Joy Randolph took awards season by storm after she won over critics with her performance in the Paul Giamatti film “The Holdovers.” She won a Golden Globe, SAG, Independent Spirit, BAFTA and Critics Choice award for her role as Mary Lamb.

Emily Blunt

The “Devil Wears Prada” actress has been in Hollywood for years and has served as a presenter for several Oscar ceremonies. But 2024 is the first time she’s been nominated for an Academy Award. The 41-year-old is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Kitty Oppenheimer, the wife of J. Robert Oppenheimer, in the film.

Jeffrey Wright:

Jeffrey Wright has won a Primetime Emmy, a Tony and a Golden Globe. So, an Oscar nod has been a long time coming. The veteran actor is up for Best Actor for his role as Thelonious “Monk” Ellison in the comedy-drama “American Fiction.” The film is also up for Best Picture.

Lily Gladstone

Lily Gladstone’s first Oscar nomination is a historic one and it’s been like that all awards season. She’s the first Native American woman to be nominated in the Best Actress category and more history will be made if she takes home the gold. She was the first Native American person to win a Golden Globe and a SAG Award.

Sandra Hüller

German actress Sandra Hüller earned her first Oscar nod for her role in the crime thriller “Anatomy of a Fall.” She also starred in the Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest,” which has earned Oscar nominations in the Best Picture and Best Director categories.

Sterling K. Brown

Sterling K. Brown is up for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “American Fiction.” Ever since his breakout performance as Christopher Darden in “The People v. O.J. Simpson” he’s racked up awards. The role earned him a Primetime Emmy and Critics Choice Award. His role as Randall in the former NBC series “This Is Us” earned him a Primetime Emmy, Critics Choice, Golden Globe and SAG awards. With all those accolades, it was only a matter of time before an Oscar nod was coming.

The 96th Academy Awards takes place on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood at 4 p.m. PST on ABC.
