The 1991 Ford F-150 Showed Us Where the Future of Pickup Trucks Was Heading
Ignore the two-tone paint and the chrome trim of the Ford F-150 pictured above, and what you're looking at is a bare-bones utility vehicle–a tool. It wasn't styled to project a certain image, but rather, to be as simple and practical as possible. Saying it was even "styled" at all is probably an overstatement.
The 1991 F-150's utilitarian nature is a reflection of where trucks were in years, but in many ways, this pickup provides a great look at the future. Inside, this truck featured red velour interior, A/C, a radio, and even space for kids on the rear jump seats. As MotorWeek's John Davis notes, it's the perfect truck for young families. One year after this truck was built, Ford introduced the ninth-generation F-Series, which moved its venerable trucks in more of a lifestyle direction. In 1997, the thoroughly modern tenth-generation F-150 eschewed generations of boxy shapes for some genuine curvy style. The transformation of the full-size pickup truck was complete.
In its day, the 1991 F-150 heralded the end of an era. It marked the beginning of pickup trucks as luxury goods, a trend that continues today.
