19-year-old arrested after vehicle rams into sheriff deputy's vehicle on I-74 in Urbana

Apr. 29—CHAMPAIGN — Police arrested a 19-year-old from Sun River Terrace on Monday — and seized three firearms reportedly found in his vehicle — after he allegedly collided with a Champaign County sheriff deputy's car on Interstate 74 in Urbana while fleeing from a traffic stop that began near Kankakee.

Deputies said that at about 1:40 p.m. Monday, they saw a vehicle that had been reported as fleeing from police in Kankakee County earlier in the day in the 800 block of Bloomington Road. As a deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle fled, got on Interstate 74 eastbound and continued at a high rate of speed.

Sheriff's deputies said the vehicle "rammed" the deputy's squad car at 1:44 p.m. near the University Avenue exit in Urbana, then hit a semitrailer and became disabled.

A search of the vehicle yielded two handguns, an extended ammunition magazine, and a rifle, deputies said. One of the firearms had the serial number defaced and the other was what is commonly referred to as a "ghost gun."

The driver, Anthony Adams, was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated fleeing and eluding, and was taken to the Champaign County jail.

A female juvenile passenger was also arrested and later released to her parent.

The deputy whose car was hit was treated for minor injuries. No other injuries resulted from the incident.

The Illinois State Police and Urbana Police Department assisted the Champaign County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.
