18-year-old charged with Robbery in connection to shooting on Stratford Park Dr.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)—The Roanoke Police Department took an 18-year-old into custody in connection to a shooting on Stratford Park Drive that happened on Wednesday, April 24.

On April 24, officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Stratford Dr. on a shots fired report. Officers found two victims with gunshot wounds, and they were taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

RPD reports one of the victims, 19-year-old Javonte D. Smith, succumbed to his injuries.

According to the police department, preliminary investigation showed that the shooting stemmed from the attempted purchase of an illegal firearm.

Police say Smith and 18-year-old Jae’vian M. Allen, identified as the other victim in the shooting, were meeting with two juvenile males to allegedly sell a firearm. The investigation found that Allen and Smith allegedly attempted to rob the two teenagers, leading to one juvenile allegedly firing shots toward them.

The juveniles allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle, but police say they were later located at a residence in Roanoke County.

A warrant for Allen was obtained early morning on Thursday, April 25 and he was taken into custody without incident on Monday, April 29.

Allen has since been charged with Robbery regarding this incident.
