17th Annual Ride of Silence in Lansing begins today at MSU

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– People are riding their way through greater Lansing today – for the 17th Annual Ride of Silence in Lansing, to remember bicyclists killed or injured, and to promote bicycle safety.

“A lot of people give me the feedback that it’s the most important and meaningful ride that they do in a year,” Tim Potter, MSU Bikes said.

The Greater Lansing Ride of Silence is sponsored by MSU Bikes and the Tri-county Bicycle Association.

Potter said this started with one person, whose close friend was hit and killed while training.

He said they expect around 200 people to show up, the same participation they’ve seen for the past ten years.

“So, it’s really a special time to just kind of remember and honor people that, you know, have been hit and seriously injured or killed,” Potter said.

“So, you know, it seems for someone who’s never done it, it sounds like a real depressing kind of thing, but it’s really not. I mean, it’s really just a time of reflection and to let motorists and others know who we see us riding.”

According to officials, the Greater Lansing Ride of Silence is part of a global effort to honor bike riders who have lost their lives.

Potter says there will be road cyclists, mountain bikes, gravel bikes, bicyclists, and tourists that all come together in this quote ‘unifying’ experience.

Registration is still open and will take place today between 5:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. located in the plaza east of Wells Hall on the Michigan State University Campus.
