16-year-old Kansas teen arrested for February bomb threat

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — A teenager has been arrested in connection to a February bomb threat.

On Feb. 20, someone called the Garden City High School, reporting a bomb inside the building. The school was safely evacuated, and a thorough search was conducted, but no explosives were found.

Investigators eventually identified the person responsible for the call as being a 16-year-old from Syracuse. They were taken into custody on April 26 at their home and are being held at the Southwest Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center on charges of aggravated criminal threat and unlawful use of a communication device.

Police say they also found evidence related to the crime in the home but did not specify exactly what they found.

“The Garden City Police Department and Garden City Public Schools take every threat seriously and will continue to partner to ensure the safety of students and staff and the community. We encourage parents to remind your child to immediately report information about any school safety-related incident(s) to administrators/staff and/or the Garden City Police Department,” said the Garden City Police Department in a news release.

Police say the teen has no direct ties to the school, but they are still investigating.
