New $15M press and new look for Albany Times Union; press replaces 1 in use since 1970
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- The Albany Times Union has a new $15 million press and a new look.
Tuesday's editions were the first to be printed on the new Commander CL press at the newspaper's headquarters in suburban Albany. The paper's updated design includes a full-color weather package, color comics and a stand-alone opinion section.
The investment comes as many newspapers de-emphasize printed products amid circulation declines.
Hearst Corp. CEO Frank Bennack, Jr. said that while the company continues to invest in digital business, many readers prefer a high-quality print product. The new press also will allow the newspaper to perform commercial print jobs.
The new press can produce up to 160,000 full-color, high-resolution copies an hour.
The previous press dates to 1970.
The paper's circulation is about 66,500 weekdays and 129,000 on Sunday.
