15 Years Later: Detectives still looking for answers in Halifax County woman’s disappearance

HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — May 16, 2024 marks 15 years since Hattie Brown disappeared from a Sheetz gas station in South Boston. However, detectives are not giving up and still working to find her.

Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, and South Boston police have continued to seek information that will lead to the details of Brown’s disappearance.

State police said Brown was last seen on May 16, 2009, at the Sheetz at the intersection of Route 58 and 501 in South Boston. Surveillance camera footage captured Brown and her nephew at the gas station in her silver 2003 Volkswagen Jetta at around 2:30 a.m.

Two months later, authorities discovered her Volkswagen was destroyed in a fire about 12 miles away from the Sheetz. Her car was located behind a barn in the east corner of Halifax County.

In 2016, Brown was declared dead. But, authorities are investigating her disappearance as a murder investigation.

At the time of her disappearance, Brown was wearing a sleeveless top and pants with side stripes. She is about 5’4 and about 155 lbs. Investigators said Brown was not carrying her purse or medications.
