15 Mysteries "PLL" Still Needs to Solve

From Cosmopolitan

Given all the murder, intrigue, and people coming back from the dead, Pretty Little Liars is a hard show to watch casually. Even devoted viewers who’ve seen every episode multiple times still have trouble piecing together all the show’s puzzles, and going into season 7B, there are still plenty of questions left unanswered. Some of these are really important - who is Uber A - while others are, well, unlikely to get any screen time in the last 10 episodes. If I have to go to my grave wondering how the moms got out of that basement, so be it.

Also, a note: In researching this post, I realized there were plenty of mysteries I thought had never been solved but actually had been, in passing or in interviews with Marlene King. For example, I recently watched an episode from the Mona-as-A period where Emily got a massage from A, but Mona was out horse-riding with Hanna. I thought the identity of Emily’s masseuse was still a mystery, but it turns out it was Lucas, and Mona said that in a later season but I'd forgotten. So if it’s not here, it’s technically “solved.”

1. What happened to Jenna’s dog Shadow? In episode seven of season one, Jenna stops by Emily’s house with a seeing-eye dog named Shadow. This dog is never seen again, but Jenna doesn’t have her vision-correcting surgery until season two and loses her sight again in season four. We all know she started using humans as seeing-eye dogs but that still doesn’t explain where Shadow went.

2. What happened to Scott Montgomery? In season two, Aria’s dad mentions that his brother Scott suffered from some sort of mental illness, and whatever it was, Byron’s worried that Mike has it too. Mike eventually stops breaking into other people’s houses but Byron never mentions Scott again. So what happened to him? Is he still alive? Does he have something to do with this A.D. mess? Only time will tell but it seems quite likely that he does.

3. Why did Eddie Lamb recognize Aria? In season five, Aria goes to Radley and meets a nurse named Eddie Lamb, who thinks he recognizes her from somewhere. She says he doesn’t but this remains a point of contention among many PLL fans, particularly the ones who think Aria might be A.D. Nothing ever happens by accident on PLL, so if Eddie said he knew Aria, he probably knew Aria. But how? Was she in Radley herself? Was she born in Radley? The mind reels.

4. Who killed Sara Harvey? Hanna thought Noel Kahn was responsible for Sara’s death but that was never confirmed. Noel is dead now so the girls will have to look elsewhere for suspects.

5. Who killed Jessica DiLaurentis? It wasn’t Charlotte - Charlotte only found Jessica’s body and buried it. Charlotte didn’t know who did it either. Could it have been Mary Drake, in revenge for Jessica taking Charlotte away from her? Or was it Uber A?

6. Who killed Charlotte DiLaurentis? This has been the driving force of season seven so far but so far there still haven’t been any answers. Uber A is supposedly after the Liars because of Charlotte’s death so perhaps Uber A isn’t responsible for this crime. Who is then? One of the Liars? Wren? The ghost of Jessica DiLaurentis?

7. Who is A.D., aka Uber A? This is obviously the million-dollar question, but knowing PLL, it likely won’t get answered until the very last minute. Theories on Uber A’s identity abound. Is it Wren? Aria? Scott Montgomery? Byron Montgomery? Spencer? Caleb? Alison? No one knows but keep guessing, because that’s half the fun of watching this show.

8. Who is Charlotte’s father? We know that Mary Drake is Charlotte’s mother but who is her father? This seems key to solving the mystery of Uber A, especially given that Mary Drake has a second child. If Charlotte’s father is alive, he’s definitely got a motive.

9. Is Spencer really Mary Drake’s daughter? Season 7A ended with Mary telling Spencer that she’s actually the second child but there’s no proof of this other than Mary’s declaration. Until there is, assume that she’s lying, because nobody in that family was ever capable of telling the truth.

10. Are Toby and Yvonne still alive? They were last seen in a car crash that may or may not have been caused by Uber A, and things did not look good for either one of them. Are they OK? And how did that crash happen?

11. Who shot Spencer? Jenna was present and shooting at the Liars when Spencer got shot, but it’s not clear that she’s the one who landed the bullet that left Spencer bleeding out on the floor. Was someone else in that school with them? Maybe Uber A?

12. What is A.D. doing with that file on Aria? In 7A, the Liars found files on themselves in Jessica DiLaurentis’s lair, except for one on Aria, because that one was missing. Later, A.D. was shown holding the Aria file and the Noel file, then burning Noel but keeping Aria. This seems important, for obvious reasons. Is Aria actually the second Drake child? Was Aria the one doing the burning? Has no one in Rosewood ever heard of digitizing files?

13. How did A manufacture those fortune cookies? And for that matter, the Alpha Bits? Look, I know it’s pointless to ask how the various A’s have obtained all their means of torturing the Liars over the years but some of them are just too bizarre to ignore. The fortune cookies in the Chinese takeout? The Alpha Bits cereal with only A’s in it? With the cookies, maybe Mona had dirt on the chef and convinced him to slip the phony fortunes in, but the Alpha Bits? It was a sealed box, sold at school! I have questions, Mona. I have questions.

14. What is Wren’s whole deal? Wren is perhaps the sketchiest person in all of Rosewood and that’s really saying something. His motivations have never been clear, his background has always been a mystery, and he comes and goes when you least expect it. He’s coming back for 7B so it seems likely that at least some Wren information will be revealed.

15. Seriously, how did the moms get out of that basement? Just one line of dialogue could solve this. Just one! I’ll wait.
