🌱 Tragic Death In Byrne Road Shooting + Bartley Place Fire

Here are the top stories in Toledo today:

  1. 14-year-old Damontre Mills has tragically died after he was found shot in a vehicle off of Byrne Road near Swan Creek Metropark Saturday. Toledo Police discovered Mills inside the vehicle, which appeared to have been struck several times by gunfire. Mills was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries Monday morning.   2. 40-year-old Preston Sproles is facing charges of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon after he allegedly forced a victim to withdraw $120 at gunpoint from an ATM. The crime occurred on December 2 in the 500 block of N. Detroit Avenue. (13abc Action News)

  3. Body cam footage from the Toledo Police Department has been released from an incident involving several juveniles that occurred near Manhattan Street on December 3. TPD were alerted to a group of juveniles who purportedly had firearms and chased them into a house at the 3400 block of Rock Court. The officers have been criticized for having their weapons drawn and using profanity. Three juveniles had warrants for their arrest. (13abc Action News)

  4. The home of a mother and her three children on Bartley Place caught fire early Sunday morning, though the children weren't home and the mother managed to escape in time. Toledo Fire & Rescue are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which remains unknown. (WTOL)

  5. The Toledo Humane Society is offering reduced adoption fees for the national 'Empty the Shelters - Holiday Hope' event happening through December 20. The event is sponsored by the BISSELL Pet Foundation, which has found homes for over 67,000 pets since it began in 2016. (WNWO NBC 24)

From my notebook:

  • Gas prices continue to trend downward in Toledo, with the latest price average price dropping another 2.6 cents according to GasBuddy. The decrease has been attributed to the COVID Omicron variant as well as US gasoline demand falling to the lowest numbers since October. (WTOL)

  • On Sunday historic Fort Meigs gave a glimpse of what Christmas was like in 1812. Featuring a Christmas open house, visitors were able to visit the site for free and play period-specific games and write Christmas cards with a quill pen and ink. (WTOL)

  • Over 8,000 Toledo Edison customers were still without power over the weekend after Saturday's high winds ravaged the area. Power was initially restored to more than 28,500 customers, with the remaining outages expected to be repaired by Sunday evening. (13abc Action News)
