13 things you need to know about your bedroom
You probably spend more time in your bedroom than anywhere else in the house, so it's essential to create a soothing space that looks stylish, too.
We spoke to ten different designers from homewings.co.uk to find out some of their best bedroom decorating ideas that will quickly transform dull spaces.
1. Add a statement rug
There is nothing worse than stepping onto a cold, hard floor when you get out of bed, so every bedroom needs a large, soft rug. Not only will adding one make the space more comfortable but is also a great way to spruce up even the smallest bedroom.
And speaking of smaller spaces, don’t make the mistake of choosing your rug too small. Counter intuitively, a big rug that partially goes underneath the bed will make a small space look much bigger.

2. Experiment with your bedding
My new favourite thing in a bedroom is linen bedding. It feels soft on your skin, it continues to get better with age and it hangs beautifully. Ironing is optional depending on the look you’re going for... bonus!

3. Indulge in a feature wall
Make the wall behind the bed a feature wall. I love to tile this wall or if tiles are not within budget, you can always get a similar effect wallpaper. There are some really cool wallpapers out there and some can now even be cleaned. My favourite at the moment is the scales wallpaper from Rockett St George.

4. Colour is key
I always choose a softer colour for the bedroom, for example, Sage Green is a favourite of mine as is Farrow & Ball Mizzle No.266. I like to offset the woodwork in a different colour to make it stand out a bit and differ to plain white.

5. Carefully plan bedside tables and lighting
To make your bedroom work harder for you, it is crucial your bedside tables suit the height of your mattress. Start with measuring your bed and mattress height and looking for something that is a similar height. When looking for your bedside table lights, remember to look you don't want to be blinded when you lie down in bed but need enough light to read while your partner sleeps. A soft light plus a little spot reading light is perfect.

6. Keep it tidy with clever storage
If you live in a big cities or are at Uni, chances are your bedroom will be a fairly small space so it is important to find clever options for storage and wardrobes. Think about multifunctional units like beds that can lift up to provide storage underneath. You want to give the sense calm through pure and clean lines and a sense of tidiness. Less is more.

7. Get creative with your headboard
An oversized headboard in a rich velvet or neutral linen with wall lights and crisp white bedding give a feeling of luxury and this can be achieved on a budget.
Jacqui Askew, interior designer
8. Create a sense of calm
It’s a bedroom so choose calm, restful colours. Create a sophisticated palette for the master bedroom by using neutrals such as white, taupe, silver, gold and charcoal. Steer away from bright prints and patterns. A softer colour palette has a measurable calming effect on the body and people can stay in these rooms longer to relax.

9. Think about the details
Use oversized linens, one size larger than your bed, to make your bed look sumptuous, luxurious and expensive. Add bold, dramatic bedside lamps to create impact.

10. Add some warmth with texture
A bedroom is a place where you want to relax and find your zen, so it's important to create an atmosphere that does just that. An easy way is by adding colour using throw pillows and throws - or go even bolder with your headboard. Don't be afraid to really add depth and textures using mixed metals/fabrics and different shades of the same colour. Layering is a great way to create the sense of cosiness and warmth.

11. Don’t neglect both ends of your bed
An easy way to add warmth to a bedroom scheme is with a cosy throw at the end of the duvet. Look for faux fur or an oversized cable knit to add softness and texture.
Jeni Madden, interior designer
12. Don't forget the walls
Large scale art above the headboard can also really bring a scheme together by creating a statement piece. If your favourite art is only small, think about hanging it asymmetrically to one side of the bed for a modern off-kilter look.

13. Inject some personality
While you want to walk in to the bedroom and draw people's eye to something really focal, such a nice headboard or wallpaper, it is important to add personal items of the couple or person whose room it is.
Personal photos for example, or decorations and accessories that say something about you or the both of you. It is your personal space after all.
