13-year-old boy arrested for homicide at San Leandro Safeway

(KRON) — A 13-year-old boy was arrested for fatally stabbing a man at a San Leandro Safeway in April, the San Leandro Police Department said. The victim was identified by police as Zion Gooden, 18.

The stabbing happened on April 2 at the Safeway located at 555 Bancroft Ave. Police arrived to find Gooden with stab wounds on his arm and chest. He later died at a hospital.

Police looked through surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses at the scene as part of its investigation.

“It appeared that a dispute arose between Gooden and a suspect, a 13-year-old juvenile, over the juvenile’s interaction with an associate of Gooden’s,” SLPD said.

The boy was arrested at his school in another city on May 16. SLPD served a search warrant at his home and found more evidence linking him to the killing.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s office has charged the boy, SLPD said. The suspected killer’s name was not released by police because he is a minor.
