12-year-old accidentally shoots himself in Northeast DC: police

WASHINGTON - A 12-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in Northeast D.C. Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Officers were called to the scene in the 3600 block of Jay Street, Northeast just after 3:45 p.m. where they found the boy with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

D.C. Fire and EMS responded and he was taken to the hospital, conscious and breathing, police say. Police say his injuries are non-life threatening.

Police first released information saying the juvenile had been shot, but following an investigation detectives determined that the 12-year-old boy accidentally discharged a weapon injuring himself.

The incident was reclassified as an ‘Injured Person to the Hospital.’

The shooting happened just a block away from where 10-year-old Arianna Davis was shot on Mother's Day while riding in the car with her family last year.

After the shooting, the family quickly drove to a nearby fire station in the 1500 block of C Street in Southeast where firefighters transported her to a nearby hospital but she died just three days later. Three suspects were charged in connection to that fatal shooting.
