12-year-old shot, killed while allegedly breaking into car in Shreveport

Over the weekend a preteen was shot and killed in Shreveport after he allegedly tried to break into a parked car in the Southern Hills neighborhood.

According to Shreveport Police Department, at approximately 11 p.m. Saturday, May 11, officers responded to a reported shots fired in the 8800 block of Hawthorne Dive.

Officers located Jaylen Coleman, 12, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head. According to police, despite first responder aid Coleman was pronounced dead.

Violent crimes investigators were immediately called to the scene and juvenile witnesses were detained.

According to police reports, Coleman and other kids were attempting to break into a vehicle when the owner of the vehicle fired a weapon.

According to police, the owner was not arrested following the incident.

The Shreveport Police Department are still in the early stages of the investigation and urge anyone with relevant information to come forward.

Coleman's death marks the 28th homicide in Caddo Parish for 2024 and the 25th in Shreveport.
