12-year-old boy dies from accidental gunshot wound in Lenoir County

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy on Thursday was accidental by a sibling.

The sheriff’s office reports the incident happened on the 2600 block of Dean Drive in Kinston. They said that it happened just before 7 p.m. and involved a .22-caliber rifle. The boy was a student at Contentnea-Savannah School. Officials with the sheriff’s office said there will be guidance counselors at the school Friday to assist students.

Officials said the name of the boy was not being released until next-of-kin and other family members were contacted. The Lenoir County Department of Social Services is aiding the sheriff’s office in this situation. The sheriff’s office was also consulting with the District Attorney’s office for guidance.
