12-year old boy in critical condition following gang rape in India

A 12-year-old boy was left in critical condition after he was brutally gang raped during a violent attack in India’s capital city of New Delhi, according to authorities.

The assault allegedly unfolded in the northeastern neighborhood of Seelampur on Sept. 18, though it was not reported until Thursday, Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Sain said in a video statement. The boy’s family has since lodged a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Women, a statutory authority established to investigate matters regarding the security and safety of women under Delhi law.

Two of the three suspects, one of whom is related to the victim, have been taken into custody.

“The three accused are from the same community, they were neighbors,” Sain said, adding that no one has yet been charged in connection with the attack.

In a statement from the Delhi Commission for Women, the boy’s parents said he was assaulted with a rod and “brutally” beaten with bricks.

“The boy is not in a good state and may not make it,” DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal told CNN.

The frequent occurrence of sexual assault and violence against women in India have prompted protests in recent years.

In 2012, the gang rape and murder of a medical student nicknamed Nirbhaya — meaning “fearless” — triggered a push for harsher penalties for assailants.
