11 people displaced in Oceanside apartment fire

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/ KUSI) –Fire damage has displaced 11 Oceanside residents and one pet cat after an apartment went up in flames shortly after midnight Saturday.

According to the Oceanside Fire Department, crews responded to 511 Canyon Dr. within minutes of a call for help and found a first story unit of a two story complex fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters determined that the blaze was threatening to extend to neighboring units. The firefighters then deployed fire hoses and applied water to the main portion of the fire, OFD explained.

Meanwhile, other firefighters searched the neighboring apartments for occupants. Crews ensured that all occupants and pets had been evacuated.

OFD said the fire was contained to the first story and was knocked down within 13 minutes and was completely contained within 25 minutes of their arrival.

One resident was assessed and released for reported smoke inhalation. No further injuries were reported by OFD.

Though the apartment of origin sustained significant damage, crews were able to prevent the blaze from extending into connected units.

A total of 11 residents and one cat were displaced due to fire and smoke damage, OFD confirmed. The property manager and Red Cross are reportedly working to ensure that all displaced occupants are provided comfort and shelter.

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.

“This incident serves as an important reminder of the importance of not overloading outlets with electrical appliances, using caution with space heaters, and regularly checking your smoke detectors,” OFD stated in a news release. “Remember, fire prevention is a shared responsibility, and together, we can create a safer living environment for everyone.”
