11-year-old boy dies in house fire, Kershaw County officials say

Five people were inside a Kershaw County home Thursday afternoon when it caught fire, and while four escaped the blaze an 11-year-old boy died, according to a release from county coroner David West.

The boy, Silas Wilder, lived near Elgin, a small town in the county, and went to Stover Middle School, the release said.

A call to 911 came in just before 6 p.m.

A person was driving by and noticed a fire behind the single-wide trailer, and by the time they turned around the back of the structure was in flames. They bailed out of the vehicle, knocked on the front door and yelled for the residents to get out, the release said.

According to West, the home is a total loss.

There is no word at this time on the cause of the fire, but South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
