#11 Gorillas Cruise Past Fort Hays State in 2-Game Sweep

PITTSBURG, KS — The #11 Pitt State Gorillas swept Fort Hays State, winning game one by way of a shutout, 8-0, in 6 innings and then came back and won game two, 4-1.

The Gorillas improve to 36-4 on the year and 10-2 in conference. Pitt State went 4-0 this weekend after sweeping Nebraska-Kearney yesterday.

Game 1 Recap — Pitt State 8, Fort Hays State 0…

The game was scoreless for the first 4 innings, until in the bottom of the 5th, Amaya Snyder hit a solo home-run to give the Gorillas the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 6th, Paxtyn Hayes hit a 2-RBI double to score Hannah Burnett and Heather Arnett to extend PSU’s lead to 3-0.

Later in the inning, Gabby Schultz singled to left field scoring two more runs to make 5-0.

Sophia Hoffman followed Schultz hitting a RBI-single, also into left field.

Arnett ended the game with a walk-off 2-RBI double to secure the run rule victory, 8-0.

Ava Laurent picked up her 12th win of the season after going; 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER and finished with 3 strikeouts.

Game 2 Recap — Pitt State 4, Fort Hays State 1…

Fort Hays State took the early lead in the top of the 1st inning after a single to right field.

Pitt State responded in the bottom of the first after Maddie Fernandez singled to the right side to tie the game at 1-all.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Fernandez stepped up to launch a solo home-run over the wall in centerfield to give the Gorillas the 2-1 advantage.

Alleyna Rushing singled to right center and the Gorillas led 3-1 in the 4th.

Hayes added an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th after she hit a solo home-run to extend the lead 4-1.

Kiana Pogroszewski earned the win after only giving up one run in 6 innings and struck out a batter. She picked up her 11th win of the year.

Chelsea Beville checked in for the bottom of the 7th and picked up her 2nd save of the season after going; 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER and one strikeout.

What’s Next?

Pitt State will be off for the week and return to action next Saturday (Apr 6) when they host conference rival Missouri Southern for a double header.

Game one is set for 1:00 p.m. and game two will be around 3:00 p.m. at the Gene Bicknell Sports Complex.
