101st Airborne Soldier Murdered in Off-Base Residence Near Fort Campbell in Kentucky
A soldier with the 101st Airborne Division was murdered in an off-base residence near Fort Campbell, Kentucky, on Saturday and the case remains under investigation, according to local civilian authorities.
Pfc. Katia Duenas-Aguilar, 23, was found dead in a residence about four miles outside of the base, according to a spokesperson with the police department in Clarksville, Tennessee. She was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division's (Air Assault) Combat Aviation Brigade.
As of Tuesday, the Army and civilian law enforcement had scant information on the investigation. No one had been arrested in connection with the homicide, and it was unclear whether any other soldiers are suspected to have been involved.
"We are stunned by the death of Pfc. Duenas-Aguilar," Lt. Col. Tony Hoefler, spokesperson for the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), said in a statement. "In the meantime, we will continue to cooperate with Army and local investigative authorities on this matter."
Duenas-Aguilar was a native of Mesquite, Texas, a town just outside of Dallas, according to a statement from the Army. She enlisted into the service as an information technology specialist in 2018 and completed basic training in 2019 at Fort Eisenhower, Georgia, the base previously known at Fort Gordon. She was then assigned to Fort Campbell.
Her awards include two Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.
Fort Campbell sits on the Kentucky-Tennessee border and is home to the famed 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). Some 30,000 soldiers are assigned to the division, which is among the Army elements with the most frantic training and deployment schedules.
The division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team recently conducted a rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Johnson, Louisiana. The 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team is currently deployed to Europe. They're set to be replaced with the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team this summer.
