UPDATE: I-10 reopens after lane closures

Editor’s Note: News 5 has learned that this incident was not a standoff, as deputies previously believed. We’ve updated the article with the latest information.

UPDATE (7:50 p.m.): The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office provided more details surrounding the incident that blocked Interstate 10 for several hours this afternoon.

HCSO shared in a press release that the incident on I-10 is connected to a homicide investigation out of Tampa.

According to the release, the suspect in the homicide investigation was the same person who was involved in the incident on I-10.

Authorities say it all happened after deputies were called to the 9200 block of Shellgrove Court by a “concerned family member” at around 7 a.m.

When deputies arrived, they found an adult male victim who was pronounced dead.

Detectives learned that Maria Pacheo Nuñez had shot and killed the man, who was believed to be her boyfriend.

The release noted that the detectives developed probable cause and obtained an arrest warrant for  Nuñez for second-degree murder with a firearm.

Nuñez was spotted an hour later by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, according to the release.

She then ended her life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sheriff Chad Chronister issued the following statement:

“This is a tragic and heartbreaking situation. Our hearts ache for the family of this man whose life was tragically ended,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister.

Violence is never an option. To anyone facing or anyone who suspects domestic violence, please remember: help is available, and you are not alone.”

UPDATE (4:50 p.m.): Interstate 10 has been reopened after this afternoon’s lane closures.
