10-year-old hits 100 mph: Boy leads Ohio troopers on a chase
For the second time in a month, a 10-year-old Ohio boy led police on a high-speed chase for miles — this time briefly hitting 100 mph, and this time leading to a felony charge.
A hearing on whether to keep the boy in juvenile detention was taking place Friday.
Police say the boy took his father's car from his Cleveland home Thursday and led police down I-90 and the Ohio Turnpike. Police tried to disable the car with spike strips across the interstate, but the boy resourcefully drove around the devices and down into a ditch, where he kept on driving.
He was stopped when troopers nudged the car into a road sign and blocked him from reentering the road.
Ohio trooper Richard Reeder told Cleveland 19 TV that eight patrol cars were involved.
"In any pursuit you have to weigh the risk versus reward when chasing a vehicle, and knowing that it was a 10-year-old child involved as a driver there's a big unknown there," said Reeder. "One of the troopers made visual contact eye-to-eye contact with the child and motioned for him to pull over, and the child physically shook his head no and continued driving."
Reeder said the boy was agitated, and kicked and spit on a trooper.
Cleveland police say it was his second joyride in a family car in two weeks. On Oct. 16, he took his mother's Dodge Charger because he "was bored," WEWS reported. He was caught driving on three flat tires on Interstate 90.
"It's a 10-year-old child, I have a 10-year-old myself, and to look at how well this person drove is just amazing, and everyone's so lucky that there was nothing tragic that happened," said Reeder.
