10 Kern County schools named to 2024 California Distinguished Schools program

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The California Superintendent of Schools announced 10 Kern County middle schools and high schools as part of nearly 300 that are part of the 2024 California Distinguished Schools Program, officials said.

The program recognizes schools that are “closing the achievement gap” and those “demonstrating exceptional student performance,” according to a release from State Superintendent Tony Thurmond’s office.

The Kern County schools named are below:

  • Bakersfield City – Chipman Junior High

  • Bakersfield City – Paul L. Cato Middle

  • Delano Joint Union High – Cesar E. Chavez High

  • Fruitvale Elementary – Fruitvale Junior High

  • Lost Hills Union Elementary – A. M. Thomas Middle

  • Panama-Buena Vista Union – Earl Warren Junior High

  • Panama-Buena Vista Union – O. J. Actis Junior High

  • Panama-Buena Vista Union – Tevis Junior High

  • Rio Bravo-Greeley Union Elementary – Rio Bravo-Greeley Elementary

  • Wasco Union High – Wasco High

The 293 schools named are selected through analysis of data through the 2023 Dashboard.

Bakersfield seventh grader leads push for fair play at all schools

Officials said schools hold the recognition for two years. Elementary, middle and high schools are recognized in alternate years.
