Mayor Bloomberg says 10 companies are joining NYC environmental program
NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City has expanded its program to improve the environment.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday that 10 companies will participate in the city's "carbon challenge."
The goals are to cut greenhouse gases, improve air quality and fight climate change.
Bloomberg says citywide emissions are down by 16 percent over six years. That means the city is more than halfway toward reaching its goal.
The companies are committed to reducing emissions from their offices by up to 40 percent in the next decade.
They include American International Group Inc., BlackRock Inc., Bloomberg LP, Credit Suisse Group AG, and Deutsche Bank AG.
The other companies are Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Google Inc., JetBlue Airways Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co., and PVH Corp.
Seventeen universities accepted the "carbon challenge" when it began in 2007. The 11 largest hospital organizations joined in 2009.
Bloomberg says four of the universities and one of the hospitals have reached their reduction targets ahead of schedule.
