106 acres burned, Fort Carson fire 20% contained

UPDATE: THURSDAY 3/28/2024 3:59 p.m.

According to Sean Brown, Garrison Commander at Fort Carson, the fire on post has burned 106 acres and is currently 20% contained.

At a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Brown was joined by Michael Madrid with the Fort Carson Fire Department, who said initial wind shifts made the fire erratic, prompting the large response and call for mutual aid, along with the proximity to buildings and houses.

No students were present at Patriot Elementary School, however Brown confirmed that several hundred people including children were evacuated from Cheyenne Mountain Child Development Center and Patriot School Age Services.

Madrid said the majority of the fire was knocked down fairly quickly, and assured the community that crews would remain on scene the rest of the day and throughout the night to watch for flare-ups and hotspots.

No cause has been determined.
