Police said the suspect was the only person hit by gunfire.

The agency reported that lifesaving measures were immediately taken by a SWAT officer who is also a paramedic. The suspect was taken to a hospital and as of 2:30 p.m. was reported to be alert and in stable condition in the ICU. Barnes said he is being treated for injuries.

One SWAT officer fired shots and has been placed on administrative leave. Barnes said that the officer has been with the department since 2011.

Barnes said it was unknown whether the suspect had a gun and why shots were fired, and those details will be part of an independent investigation.

Barnes added that it is routine to have the SWAT team respond in cases like this, and described the suspect as “high risk” with a “violent criminal history.”

Law enforcement will remain on the scene for several hours as an investigation is underway. No officers were injured.
